A team of road repair and maintainance specialists from West Gosford-based company, Sharpe Bros, took time out from their busy roadworks schedule to judge hundreds of artworks in the 2009 Sharpe Bros Roadworkers Prize at the Gosford Regional Gallery in early November.

New Machine For Pavement Edges

The Company used machines from their Sidewinder range to fix drop-offs on the pavement edges, which were as high as 200mm. They then added an extra 1.5m of width on each side of the road.

"The guys do take their jobs as art critics just as seriously as they take their jobs as road repairers, even though many people said they wouldn't get past the nude portraits." Mr Sharpe said.

Ten Roadworkers from civil and road maintenance contractor Sharpe Bros have selected the winner of the Roadworkers Prize at the Gosford Regional Gallery. Jason Hodge, a road worker and one of the judges, said he and his colleagues selected Huang He's "Silent City" because of the quality of the painting and because the image appealed to them.

The most eagerly awaited award in the Gosford Art Prize, the Sharpe Bros. Roadworkers Prize, has been announced and not suprisingly the winner features plenty of bitumen.

Artists on the Central Coast will receive a significant boost through a major donation made by a local company. Famous for their green colour, Gosford civil contracting and road maintenance company, Sharpe Bros, announced early last month that they would continue their proud association with the Gosford Regional Gallery, pledging $25,000 over five years to support Australian artists.
